I confess. I've been very slow to join the birds on the Twitter line tweeting away. Oh, I've had an account for some time and have felt somewhat like a stalker as I watched various people chirp. I just didn't see much practical application of Twitter in the earlier days. In fact, I've even blogged on my personal blog about Twitter being ADHD micro blogging. But now things are really developing nicely as meaning and continuity can more easily be aggregated from the flow of consciousness in the Twitterverse. (Isn't that a skill we all need these days--and not just for Twitter, but for the whole internet firehose.)
Now and then I've piddled with Twitter. I've even spent hours trying to integrate my tweets into my personal MovableType blog. I've tried several solutions. At the time of this writing, they are clunky at best. My WordPress friends may be finding this easier. I'm not sure.
Today Wes Fryer, @wfryer, tweeted about Hootsuite for the iPhone. I explored both Hootsuite and Hootsuite for the iPhone. I like them much better than TweetDeck. For one: I could never get my TweetDeck account to sync with my iPhone.
Several things I especially like about Hootsuite:
- I can have Hootsuite monitor my blogs RSS feeds and automatically tweet updates to selected Twitter accounts. Now that's just nice--really nice.
- I can easily create a "tailor-made" column in Hootsuite and easily embed it into my blog template. This is really nice! Think collaborative projects with their own Twitter feed embeds related to the project, from those participating in the collaboration, etc. I just embedded my Twitter stream at the bottom of this blog.
- I can blast a tweet out on all of my Twitter accounts at once.
- I haven't had any syncing issues with Hootsuite for iPhone, which was just released today.
- Stats are built in.
- You can have multiple users on your Hootsuite account, called editors!
- You don't leave the iPhone app to open Safari for links within Tweets; so, you don't lose your place in the app when visiting links.
Hootsuite lacks a few features, like: video embeds and geo tagging for example. But I suspect those and other features are in the works.
Overall so far: Tim Likes! Twitter is intriguing me more and more.
