Maybe I'm the last person to learn this. Maybe everybody knew it already. But... Just in case...
Mac users: you can have your favorite dashboard widgets float above your computer desktop while you work! Just go to your dashboard, then click and drag on the widget you want to move to your desktop while you use your keyboard shortcut to close your widgets. [To find the keyboard shortcut that opens and closes your dashboard widgets, go to System Preferences ➜ Exposé & Spaces as pictured below. Click image for full size.]

I was very interested to see that I could put widgets on my desktop. However when I tried this it would not work. After searching online I discovered that you have to go to the terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
You then have to log out and log back in. What this does is put you in a mode for developing widgets. Now follow Dr. Tyson's instructions for moving the widget.
To get out of development mode type
defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode NO
Then log in and out of your Mac again.
